জনজীবনে বিরাজিত অশান্তি ও অস্থিরতার অবসান ঘটিয়ে সকলের অংশগ্রহণে বাংলাদেশে জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠানের পথ সুগম করতে সহসাই জরুরী অবস্থা জারির যে জল্পনা-কল্পনা চলছে সে ব্যাপারে মার্কিন পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয় বাংলাদেশ প্রতিদিনকে ২৫ মার্চ জানিয়েছে যে, বাংলাদেশের ভবিষ্যত কী হবে তা বাংলাদেশের মানুষই সিদ্ধান্ত নেবে।

আওয়ামী লীগ, বিএনপি, জামায়াত, জাতীয় পার্টি-সহ সকল রাজনৈতিক দলের সমন্বয়ে নয়া জাতীয় সরকার গঠনের সম্ভাবনা নিয়েও উদ্ভ’ত গুঞ্জন সম্পর্কে মার্কিন মন্ত্রণালয়ের ঐ মুখপাত্র আরো জানিয়েছেন, মুক্ত, অবাধ এবং শান্তিপূর্ণ পরিবেশে গণতন্ত্রে উত্তরণে অন্তর্বর্তীকালিন সরকারের প্রচেষ্টাকে আমরা স্বাগত জানাচ্ছি-যা বাংলাদেশের জনগণকে স্বাচ্ছন্দে তাদের নেতা নির্বাচনের পথ সুগম করবে।

গত জুলাই-আগস্টে ছাত্র-জনতার আন্দোলনের মুখে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা ক্ষমতা ছেড়ে দেয়ার পর আওয়ামী লীগের শতশত নেতা-কর্মী এবং হাজারো পুলিশ অফিসারকে নৃশংসভাবে হত্যার ঘটনা ঘটেছে। অর্ধ শতাধিক সাংবাদিকসহ হাজারো রাজনৈতিক কর্মীকে গ্রেফতার করা হয়েছে। চলমান গুঞ্জন অনুযায়ী যদি বাংলাদেশে জাতীয় সরকার গঠিত হয় তাহলে এসব সাংবাদিক ও রাজনৈতিক নেতা-কর্মীরা কী মুক্তি পাবেন? একইসাথে আওয়ামী লীগের নেতা-কর্মীদের নির্বিচারে হত্যা, পুলিশ অফিসারদের হত্যার জন্যে দায়ীরাও কী বিচারের আওতায় আসবে-এমন অপর এক প্রশ্নের জবাবে ঐ মুখপাত্র উল্লেখ করেছেন, ‘বাংলাদেশের সকল মানুষের নিরাত্তা এবং আইনের শাসন সমুন্নত করতে অন্তর্বর্তী সরকারের উদ্যোগকেও স্বাগত জানাচ্ছি।’
গত ৭ মাসে বাংলাদেশে ধর্মীয় সংখ্যালঘুদের ওপর হামলা, ধর্ষণ, ব্যবসা ও বাড়িÑঘরে লুটতরাজের পর অগ্নি সংযোগের ঘটনাবলির সাথে জড়িতরা কি শাস্তির আওতায় আসবে? জবাবে পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ের মুখপাত্র বলেছেন, আমরা ন্যায্য এবং স্বচ্ছ আইনী প্রক্রিয়াকে সমর্থন করি। নির্দিষ্ট ক্ষেত্রে আমাদের কোন মন্তব্য নেই।

Q: It is also reported that the cabinet will be formed with the new chief adviser and all political parties, including the Awami League, BNP, Jatiya Party, Jamaat-E-islami leaders. Does the United States have any suggestions on this?
A: We welcome the Interim Government’s efforts to prepare for democratic elections which will allow the Bangladeshi people to choose their leaders in a free, fair, and peaceful manner.

Q : Hundreds of Awami League leaders and activists and thousamds of Bangladesh Police Force personnel were also killed after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left power after the July-August movement last year. Thousands of political activists, including more than half a hundred journalists, were arrested. If the national government is formed, will those arrested persond will be released? And will the killers of Awami League leaders and police officers be tried for those hanious crime?

A: We welcome the Interim Government’s focus on ensuring security and upholding the rule of law for all in Bangladesh.

Q: Do you think those involved in the killing, rape, attacked house and business establishment of the religious minority of Bangladesh should be subjected to punishment?

A: We support fair and transparent legal processes. We do not have a comment on specific cases.
