In protest of the rise of anti-Liberation forces in Bangladesh, the spread of extremism, violence against women and minorities, the killing and persecution of Awami League leaders and activists, lack of justice, suppression of press freedom, gang rapes, mob anarchy, and conspiracies to hand over the spirit of the Liberation War to foreign powers in the name of the so-called “August Revolution,” a new organization—“Global Coalition for Secular and Democratic Bangladesh”—was officially launched on Sunday, November 2, 2025, comprising 50 organizations from 13 countries around the world.
The organization was inaugurated through an online meeting presided over by Dr. Nurun Nabi, a valiant freedom fighter of the 1971 Liberation War, Ekushey Padak awardee, internationally renowned scientist, author, and councilman elected from New Jersey.
The three-and-a-half-hour-long meeting, conducted by Engineer Rana Hasan Mahmud from Virginia and activist Swikriti Barua from New York, was attended by a diverse group of distinguished personalities—including internationally acclaimed journalists, engineers, professors, lawyers, researchers, filmmakers, poets, writers, and activists.
Among the notable attendees were: artist and freedom fighter Tajul Imam from New York; journalist Dostagir Jahangir from Washington; Tanoy Alam, Fatema Rahman Ruma, Delowar Zahed Biplob, and Fazlur Rahman from Germany; Monir Rahman and Ivy Rahman from Australia; Dr. Kazi Masud from Saudi Arabia; activist Violet Halder from Norway; Barrister Monirul Islam Monju, Ahmed Mosle Uddin Khokon, Syed Abedin, Sujat Monsur, and Professor Dr. Arif Khan from Great Britain and London; Rahman Mamun from Switzerland; journalist Taufiq Maruf from the Netherlands; Shaila Ahmed Lopa from Canada; former Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University Dr. Abdul Awal; Kazi Delwar Elahi, Himadri Roy, Nadim Iqbal, Shamim Ahmed, Syed Shakhawat Hossain, Golam Kibria, Tahsin Shawon, Kazi Mamun, Dr. Bamon Das; Robius Sani from Italy; Mahfuzur Rahman, Tipu Chowdhury from New England, USA; Ujjal Barua from Boston; Niru Kamrun Nahar from Ohio; Syed Monowar Rashed and Nahida Naser Yasmin from Texas; Dr. Ariful Islam from Pennsylvania; and from New York, Jakaria Chowdhury, Engineer Mohammad Ali Siddiqui, Manzur Kader, Minhaj Ahmed Sammu, Amar Ali, Joyturjo Chowdhury, Jharna Chowdhury, Subrata Talukdar, and this reporter, Aslam Ahmed Khan.
Speakers at the meeting expressed their gratitude to Dr. Nurun Nabi for taking this initiative and requested him to serve as Chief Coordinator to engage representatives from other countries. Accepting the responsibility, Dr. Nabi stated:
“Today, the Bangladesh of the Liberation War is held hostage by the defeated forces of 1971, aided by traitorous collaborators like Dr. Yunus—the agent of unrest. To free Bangladesh from this situation, we need another Liberation War. The birth of this coalition aims to unite all Bengali-speaking people across the globe in that struggle.”
He added that just as the Bangladeshi diaspora played a glorious role during the 1971 Liberation War, this organization would strive to do the same in today’s context.
Journalist Dostagir Jahangir expressed solidarity with the ideals and principles of the platform and urged everyone to join the movement to reclaim the spirit of the Liberation War from the grip of deceitful impostors.
Engineer Rana Hasan Mahmud stated that only those who believe in Bangabandhu and the spirit of the Liberation War can be members of this coalition.
“Those who do not believe in the Liberation War or the slogan ‘Joy Bangla’ have no place in this organization,” he emphasized.
Freedom fighter and artist Tajul Imam invited poets, writers, and publishers from all over the Bengali-speaking world to participate in the 2nd Bangabandhu International Book Fair – 2026.
Journalist Taufiq Maruf remarked that this is not a conventional organization:
“It has begun its journey with both immediate and long-term goals. The coalition will continue its activities until Bangabandhu’s dream of a truly liberated Bangladesh is realized.”
Minhaj Ahmed Sammu said the organization will act as a think tank for all pro-Liberation individuals and organizations across different countries, states, cities, and counties worldwide.
Speakers also urged Dr. Nabi to ensure that the coalition operates in a democratic manner.
In closing, Dr. Nurun Nabi thanked everyone and officially ended the meeting. He also formed a three-member committee, comprising Barrister Monirul Islam Monju and Engineer Rana Hasan Mahmud, to prepare a protest statement highlighting the ongoing farce of so-called trials against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina conducted by Dr. Yunus’s “kangaroo court” under the guise of justice—aimed at bringing this to the attention of the United Nations and global human rights organizations.
He concluded by announcing that the organization’s next action plan would be declared soon.
