July Genocide in Gopalgonj. Bangladesh

With the blessing of Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the current Chief Adviser of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, a group of students formed a new political party known as NCP (National Citizens Party), or popularly known as King’s party. Dr. Yunus created such a political party in 2007 after he received his Nobel Prize award but soon he abandoned it as there was no support for it.

Since the formation of NCP they have been involved in mob violence, extortion and destruction of properties. A group of them have been vandalizing, destroying and burning both public and private properties, majars, religious institutions, statues of national heros, and even businesses and factories. At times, they blame the followers of the 2nd largest party of Bangladesh, the BNP. In many cases, it is widely known that they vandalize properties or businesses or even kills people if they fail to provide them the extortion money. They harass girls and women if they fail to put on hejab. Last year, they destroyed the nation’s historic museum of independence, the 32 Dhanmondi, the house of the founder of the country Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman while the army remained onlookers. They, in fact, bulldozed the historic museum for days with the tacit support of the Yunus government. Yunus administration provided them the government bulldozers. They also bulldozed hundreds of residential buildings belonging to past government officials including many TV stations, Railroad tracks, railway stations, metro rail, Prime Minister’s official residence the Gonobhavan, IT and Roads & Highways offices, few offices of the government Secretariat, etc.

This time the same group decided to celebrate their anniversary of usurpation of power in Gopalgonj, a bastion of the Awami League party where Bangabandhu’s mausoleum is located. Their main intention was to bulldoze and destroy the graveyard or mausoleum of the Father of the Nation at Tungipara, Gopalgonj. No wonder, the local people, rank and file, irrespective of party affiliation, approached the government and solicited protection. His mausoleum or graveyard is a historical site for the nation. When the government did not respond to them, the community leaders created human blockade on the roads leading to the mausoleum.

Interestingly these jehadis, the members of NCP were escorted by police, BGB, RAB, including military contingents to Gopalgonj and as the local community resisted the jehadis by creating roadblocks and throwing stones at them, the army opened fire and killed reportedly 24 people and wounded over 500 people. Afterwards, they imposed curfew for 24 hours and started ‘operation devil hunt’ house-to-house and tortured, killed and detained anyone who supports or sympathizes the Awami League (AL) party. How many people were killed, tortured or arrested is still unknown. They wanted to clean out the AL sympathizers so that the AL can never dare to stage demonstrations anywhere in the country. They wanted to teach them a lesson.

Since there is total media blackout, the social media reported that they killed, burned and buried many dead ones. Basically. they let loose ethnic cleanzing and genocide against the local people as they support the AL party and stopped them from vandalizing. AL candidates including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina never lost any election in that entire region. In order to wipe out their support, they launched the Gopalgonj Genocide on 16 July 2025.

It is reported in the social media that the following military officers were personally responsible for such killings and genocide:
(1) Brig. Gen. Md Mizanur Rahman (37 BMA) and
(2) Lt. Col. M. Emdadul Islam (26 BMA).
If any of their superiors are involved, all of them should also be discharged and suspended until a thorough investigation is completed by an independent investigation authority, preferably by the UN or ICJ/ ICC.

The nation demands that they must face justice and we also request the UN not to allow any of these criminals to be engaged in any UN Peacekeeping missions. And if found guilty, the civilized nations must seize their properties abroad and they must impose travel restrictions on them and on their children as they are a disgrace to the nation and to the civilized world.

Bangladesh has been promoting the concept of the culture of peace (CoP) for almost 25 years and all UN member states approved it. The basic concept of CoP is to have sustainable peace across nations and in order to achieve it, it requires each nation or community to create a mindset of respect and tolerance towards others, irrespective of ethnicity, color, opinion, religion or background, and never involve in ethnic cleanzing or genocide. These army officers acted just the opposite. Therefore, the UN should evaluate the causes behind such heinous crimes.

Also it is time to examine the role of Bangladesh military leadership. Since they failed to protect their own citizens, failed to maintain peace and stability and instead let loose a genocide, the UN should examine their actions and inactions as a discipline force.
