Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, says her office has reported more than 700 death threats in five years—initially from the “left,” and now, from the “right” after her recent break with President Donald Trump over the Jeffrey Epstein files, she wrote Sunday on X.
The congresswoman announced she will retire early from her third term, following a public break between her and the president. The split of staunch “America First” policymaker and Trump ally marks a rare and significant fissure within the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement. Greene has served as one of Trump’s most influential surrogates, amplifying his message across the hard-right base and shaping grassroots activism.
Recently, however, she has been among the GOP’s most outspoken internal critics, especially on foreign policy and the Epstein files, in which she signed onto a petition to force a vote to release them. Trump then revoked his endorsement of Greene and publicly called her out in Truth Social posts, referring to her as “Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Green [sic]” stating that she is “a disgrace to our GREAT REPUBLICAN PARTY!”
Greene, who was first elected in 2020, and then reelected in 2022 and 2024, has been a polarizing member of Congress. Her previous campaign records show expenses for personal security long before the Trump divide. Members of Congress from both parties have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on private security, citing rising threats of political violence and deepening polarization.
In a lengthy X thread on Sunday, Greene described the threats she has received and the people she contacted for help, saying she has never been given a security detail, and that any protection she has had was privately hired.
“My office has reported 773 death threats to Capitol Police, but those were just the threats that came directly into my office via call or email, and don’t include the countless threats online to myself and my family members. We just didn’t have enough people to constantly monitor that,” the congresswoman wrote.
I’m going to give you a glimpse of what it’s been like since I joined Congress on Jan 3, 2021 leading the fight on key Republican issues and for President Trump. My office has reported 773 death threats to Capitol Police, but those were just the threats that came directly into my office via call or email, and don’t include the countless threats online to myself and my family members. We just didn’t have enough people to constantly monitor that. These 773 death threats do not include all of the dozens of swatting calls to myself and my family members and pizza doxxings. And through all of this, I was never given a security detail, like the secret service details the President, VP, Cabinet, Speaker, Majority Leader, Whip, Minority Leader and others have. Not once. Rome City Police and Floyd County Sheriff Dept have always voluntarily watched over me when I’m at home, and for that I will be forever grateful and it shows what good people they are. I’m also thankful to Capitol Police who’ve pursued investigations, recommended prosecutions, and provided assistance to our office. Although dozens have been prosecuted and cases are still ongoing, any security detail I have had, I’ve had to hire. As an American woman, I’m a big believer in the 2nd amendment and own multiple firearms, practice frequently, carry, never want to be defenseless, and my self, my team, and my family have had to independently be prepared to protect ourselves. That is a high bar to ask of anyone as it should not be this way and has always grieved me for my family and my staff.
