Q: about 5 months have passed since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh due to student movement. So far, the law and order situation has not improved and there has been no peace in public life. At least 5 million people have gone into hiding fearing attacks by political opponents. The members of these families are fall in to indescribable misery due to lack of money and food. Does the United states have any observations in this regard?
A: We welcome the Interim Government’s focus on ensuring security and rule of law for all Bangladeshis.
We continue to engage closely with the Interim Government, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, as it charts an equitable, inclusive, and democratic future for the people of Bangladesh.
Q: Dozens of dissident journalists have been charged with alleged murder and arrests have taken place before investigation. As a result, the media of Bangladesh has fallen into a scary situation. Not being brave enough to reveal the truth. the Committee to Protect Journalists or CPJ, the human rights watch has expressed concern in this regard. What is the position of the United states?
A: We are aware of these charges. We encourage fair and transparent legal processes for all individuals.
The United States supports media freedom globally. The free flow of accurate information, ideas, and opinions, including dissenting ones, is essential for transparent, responsive, and inclusive governance.
We strongly encourage the Interim Government of Bangladesh to ensure that journalists can perform their essential work freely and without fear of retribution.
Q: Various circles fear that the problem of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh is gradually becoming a regional security risk. In addition, recent overcrowding in Bangladesh’s Rohingya refugee camps has put a strain on its infrastructure. In such a situation, seven years have passed in spite of various resolutions in the United Nations. Is the United states interested in taking any more effective steps to solve this problem in the new year?
A: Helping resolve the Rohingya refugee crisis remains a priority for us.
The people and government of Bangladesh have shown generosity in hosting Rohingya refugees who have fled persecution in Burma. As the single largest donor of humanitarian assistance in response to the refugee crisis in Bangladesh, the United States is committed to supporting Rohingya refugees and members of their host communities and welcome others to join the effort.
We will continue to work with Bangladesh to support Rohingya and members of other vulnerable groups from Burma that have taken refuge there. Our assistance helps bolster access to education and livelihood opportunities, as well as expanding access to healthcare and clean water for Rohingya and host communities in Bangladesh.
